Bonner Springs - Edwardsville
ELWOOD'S VISIT TO BONNER SPRINGS, KANSAS, WAS HIS FIRST VISIT TO A HIGH SCHOOL. HE WAS GREETED THERE BY THE BONNER SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL MULTICULTURAL STUDIES CLASS, WHO HAD A BIG SURPRISE IN STORE FOR ELWOOD.

THEY INTRODUCED HIM TO LUCI, AND....IT WAS LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT!!

LUCI AND ELWOOD ENJOYED A VARIETY OF CULTURAL EXPERIENCES WITH THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. THEY PRACTICED SPANISH WITH THE SPANISH 3 STUDENTS AND THEN VISITED AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, WHERE THEY READ CHILDREN'S BOOKS IN SPANISH WITH THIRD GRADERS.

ELWOOD ENJOYED LEARNING ABOUT STUDENTS WHO HAVE SPECIAL LEARNING NEEDS DURING AUTISM AWARENESS WEEK.

ELWOOD AND LUCI WERE EXCITED FOR THEIR FIELD TRIP TO KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, WHICH IS A GREAT PLACE TO EXPLORE AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURE.

THEIR FIRST STOP WAS PAPA LEW'S SOUL FOOD RESTAURANT, WHERE THEY LEARNED ABOUT SOUL FOOD'S MOST IMPORTANT INGREDIENT - LOVE!
AFTER PAPA LEW'S, IT WAS OFF TO THE KANSAS CITY NEGRO BASEBALL LEAGUES AND JAZZ MUSEUMS.

ELWOOD WAS INSPIRED BY GREAT AFRICIAN AMERICAN BASEBALL STARS OF THE PAST.

LUCI LOVED THE INTERACTIVE MUSIC EXHIBITS IN THE JAZZ MUSEUM, WHICH IS IN KANSAS CITY'S FAMOUS JAZZ DISTRICT AT 18TH AND VINE.

THERE WAS MUSIC IN THE AIR ON THE BUS RIDE HOME TO BONNER SPRINGS.

SOON IT WAS TIME FOR PROM, WHERE ELWOOD AND LUCI REIGNED AS HONORARY PRINCE AND PRINCESS.

ELWOOD HAD BEEN CURIOUS TO KNOW WHY THE MULTICULTURAL STUDIES STUDENTS WERE SO MYSTERIOUS ABOUT WHAT THEY WERE DOING FOR SEVERAL DAYS IN THE HIGH SCHOOL FACS ROOM, BUT HE SOON DISCOVERED THAT THE SECRECY WAS ALL ABOUT.

ELWOOD'S VISIT HAD INSPIRED THE STUDENTS TO EXPLORE THEIR IDENTIFIES AND THEIR HOPES AND DREAMS FOR THE FUTURE. AS A GOING AWAY PRESENT TO ELWOOD, THE STUDENTS CREATED A SELF PORTRAIT QUILT FOR ELWOOD TO KEEP AS A REMINDER THAT YOUNG PEOPLE SHOULD ALWAYS BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES AND DREAM BIG.

IN THE QUILT, ELWOOD IS SURROUNDED BY PORTRAITS OF HIS FRIENDS SEWN IN THE STYLE OF SPANISH ARTIST PABLO PICASSO. THE STUDENTS CHOSE FABRICS TO REPRESENT THEIR CULTURAL HERITAGE, AND THE QUILT DESIGN SYMBOLIZES ELWOOD'S PATH AS HE TRAVELS AROUND THE WORLD TEACHING YOUNG PEOPLE TO FOLLOW THEIR DREAMS.

ELWOOD WAS SAD TO SAY GOODBYE TO HIS FRIENDS AT BONNER SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL, BUT HE WAS LOOKING FORWARD WITH EXCITEMENT TO SEE WHAT NEW ADVENTURES THE NEXT DAY WOULD BRING.
