Metropolis Chamber of Commerce

I GUESS I SHOULD BEGIN THIS JOURNEY BY TELLING WHERE METROPOLIS, ILLINOIS ACTUALLY IS. WE ARE LOCATED ALONG THE BEAUTIFUL OHIO RIVER. RIGHT ACROSS THE RIVER FROM US IS PADUCAH, KY. WE ARE TRULY AT THE VERY BOTTOM SOUTHERN TIP OF ILLINOIS.

IN 1972, METROPOLIS BECAME THE OFFICIAL "HOMETOWN OF SUPERMAN". FOLLOWING THIS, OUR LOCAL NEWSPAPER CHANGED ITS NAME TO THE "METROPOLIS PLANET". A 15 FOOT BRONZE STATUE WAS UNVEILED IN 1993 AND IS LOCATED ON MARKET STREET AND OVERLOOKS OUR UPTOWN AREA.

A 15 FOOT BRONZE STATUE WAS UNVEILED IN 1993 AND IS LOCATED ON MARKET STREET AND OVERLOOKS OUR UPTOWN AREA. IT STANDS DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF OUR COURT HOUSE.

ELWOOD CAME TO METROPOLIS, ILLINOIS A SHORT TIME BEFORE OUR ANNUAL SUPERMAN CELEBRATION IN JUNE OF 2009. WHILE SUPERMAN WAS HERE, ELWOOD VISITED HIM AT ONE OF THE TENTS AND GOT SUPERMAN'S AUTOGRAPH ON A SOUVENIOR BOOKLET.

ELWOOD TOOK TIME TO VISIT THE MURAL LOCATED ON MARKET AND FERRY STREETS. I GUESS I SHOULD ALSO MENTION THAT MOST OF ELWOOD'S TRAVELS WERE ON A SCOOTER. HE LOVED THE WIND IN HIS HAIR AND HIS HAT NEVER FELL OFF.

ELWOOD ENJOYED VISITING THE AIRPORT - KEEP IN MIND, WE HAVE A VERY SMALL MUNICIPAL AIRPORT AND SOME OF THE HANGERS ARE OCCUPIED BY CARS AND SUCH. ELWOOD REALLY ENJOYED GETTING TO SIT IN ONE OF THE CARS THERE. HE ATTEMPTED TO CONVINCE OUR AIRPORT MANAGER, JERRY CAUDLE, TO ALLOW HIM TO FLY THE PLAN BUT JERRY SUGGESTED JUST SITTING ON THE WING. ELWOOD ALSO INQUIRED ABOUT HOW TO GET HIS PILOT'S LICENSE.

Fort Massac State Park

ONE PLACE ELWOOD TRULY ENJOYED (WELL, HE ACTUALLY HAD A BLAST WHILE VISITING) WAS FORT MASSAC STATE PARK. THE FOLLOWING IS TAKEN FROM IDNR WEBSITE HTTP://WWW.DNR.STATE.IL.US/REGARD FORT MASSAC.

TODAY, FORT MASSAC IS A CAPTIVATING REMINDER OF DAYS GONE BY, A FASCINATING EXCURSION THROUGH THE ENTIRE COURSE OF AMERICAN HISTORY, AND THE PERFECT PLACE TO RELAX IN SOOTHING NATURAL SURROUNDINGS AND EXPLORE LIFE AS IT WAS LIVED WHEN OUR COUNTRY WAS YOUNG.

THE HISTORIC SITE IS A REPLICA OF THE 1802 AMERICAN FORT THAT WAS ON SITE. THE HISTORIC FORT AREA CONTAINS TWO BARRACKS, THREE BLOCK HOUSES, OFFICER QUARTERS, WELL, STOCKADE ALONG WITH A FRAISE FENCE. THE SITE ALSO HAS THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL OUTLINE OF THE 1759 FRENCH FORT. THERE IS ALSO A VISITORS CENTER/OFFICE COMPLEX ALONG WITH AN AREA FOR THE MUSEUM.

ACTUAL RE-CREATIONS OF PIONEER LIFE OF THE 1700'S DURING THE ANNUAL FORT MASSAC ENCAMPMENT AND SEVERAL LIVING HISTORY WEEKENDS EACH YEAR BRING THE PAST TO LIFE, LETTING YOU EXPERIENCE IT YOURSELF.

WITH ALL THIS, AND THE PICNICKING, CAMPING, HIKING, BOATING AND HUNTING OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE IN THE REST OF THE 1,450-ACRE AREA, FORT MASSAC STATE PARK IS AN ALLURING COMPLETE AND SELF-CONTAINED FAMILY VACATION SPOT.
